Endometriosis is a debilitating condition that can often remain silent, with symptoms masquerading as other health issues. In endometriosis, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterine cavity, leading to difficulty in conceiving in up to 30–40% of women. The causes of endometriosis include a combination of genetic, hormonal, and immune factors, and it affects many women worldwide. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Neha Gupta, Additional Director, Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Fortis Hospital, Noida, spoke about the silent signs of endometriosis that women need to look out for.
Women need to be vigilant and pay attention to the following subtle signs:
- Painful or heavy periods: Menstrual cramps that worsen progressively and are not relieved by minimal antispasmodic medication.
- Persistent pelvic pain: Pelvic pain similar to menstrual cramps that begins before and persists after periods; new-onset pain during intercourse or bowel movements.
- Bowel or urinary issues: Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or painful urination during menstruation.
- Mood changes and anxiety: Mood swings, irritability, depression, or anxiety during menstruation.
- Infertility or difficulty conceiving: Unexplained difficulty in getting pregnant or recurrent miscarriages.
These symptoms can be subtle, and women may often attribute them to stress or other common conditions. However, if one experiences several of these signs, it is essential to consult a gynecologist. A detailed evaluation is usually required, involving ultrasound and contrast MRI.
Treatment focuses on suppressing menstruation and/or surgically removing the hormone-responsive endometrial tissue deposits found outside the uterus. Depending on the symptoms, age, desire for future pregnancy, and stage of the disease, a woman may benefit from medical and/or surgical treatment. Minimally invasive surgeries like laparoscopic or robotic procedures, when performed by experts, are especially effective in excising the disease, improving fertility, and providing symptom relief.
Why Early Detection Matters?
- Early diagnosis can improve treatment outcomes and enhance quality of life.
- Delayed diagnosis can lead to worsening pain, infertility, and mental health complications.
In conclusion, Dr. Neha Gupta emphasizes, “Track your symptoms and menstrual cycle. Discuss your concerns with your gynecologist. Remember, endometriosis is not just about painful periods—it's a complex condition that requires timely attention and care.”
