Winter brings the chill of the air, festive celebrations and cosy moments by the fire with it. However, the colder months also come with their share of health challenges, particularly for the heart. Heart issues often spike during winter due to the combination of dropping temperatures, increased blood pressure by virtue of cold-induced vasospasm and the strain placed on the heart by shivering. Also, the reduced physical activity and seasonal stress can further impact cardiovascular health which makes it even more important to prioritise the heart's well-being during this season.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Brajesh Kumar Mishra - Interventional Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist, Manipal Hospital Gurugram listed effective ways and workouts to maintain heart health during winter.

How to keep your heart healthy in the winter season?

1. You can keep yourself physically active through a few indoor exercises such as yoga and dancing or use your workout videos at home that will maintain your heart rate and keep you sufficiently fit for your heart.

2. Eat well-balanced foods rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains to help support your entire cardiovascular system.

3. Hydrate yourself daily to keep the blood circulating and avoid dehydration, which usually puts additional stress on the heart.

4. Dress up warmly in layers so the temperature of your surroundings will not put as much strain on your heart as it will work harder to maintain body temperature in the cold climate.

5. Avoid excessive alcohol and high-sodium foods, as they can elevate blood pressure and negatively impact heart health.

Workouts To Consider During Winter

Physiological training to improve cardiovascular fitness is beneficial also even during adverse weather. Yoga enhances flexibility, reduces stress and improves heart health. Jumping rope is a specific form of high-intensity cardiorespiratory exercise capable of elevating the heart rate and giving a calorie-expenditure effect. Dance cardio is a leisure/exercise integrative activity that increases heart rate and has a training and coordination effect. Type resistance strength exercises, i.e., push-ups, squats or lunges not only promote strength development but also provide the conditions of cardiovascular training. Walking indoors at rest or in the home facilitates reaching adult step goals as well as maintaining a certain level of activity.

Benefits Of Winter Workouts To Keep Your Heart Active

  • Improves Circulation- Enhances blood flow, keeping your heart and vessels healthy.
  • Strengthens the Heart- Regular exercise fortifies the heart muscle, reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
  • Regulates Blood Pressure- Helps combat winter-induced spikes in blood pressure.
  • Prevents Weight Gain- Keeps seasonal weight gain in check, reducing heart strain.
  • Boosts Energy Levels- Fights winter fatigue and improves overall stamina.
  • Reduces Stress- Releases endorphins to improve mood and manage seasonal stress.
  • Strengthens Immunity- Supports the immune system, helping you stay healthy during the colder months.

Incorporating these practices into your daily routine during winter can significantly benefit your heart health. Always consult a doctor before starting any new exercise regimen, especially if you have existing health conditions.
