Obesity And Female Infertility: Obesity can have significant implications for female fertility. Excess body weight can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to irregular menstrual cycles and ovulatory dysfunction. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), commonly associated with obesity, contribute to subfertility.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Anusha Rao P, Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad explained how obesity can cause female infertility.

Obesity And Female Infertility
Dr Rao said that adipose tissue produces oestrogen, influencing the reproductive system. Elevated oestrogen levels can disrupt the hormonal interplay necessary for regular ovulation and conception. Insulin resistance, often linked to obesity, can also impact fertility by affecting ovarian function.

Obese individuals may face challenges during assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like in vitro fertilisation (IVF), as obesity is associated with lower success rates in these procedures. Additionally, obesity increases the risk of complications during pregnancy, posing potential risks to both mother and child.
Effective management of obesity in females involves adopting a holistic approach that combines healthy eating, regular physical activity, and lifestyle changes. Firstly, focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains while limiting intake of processed foods, sugary beverages, and high-calorie snacks. Portion control is essential to manage calorie intake.

Incorporating regular physical activity is crucial. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming. Strength training exercises can also contribute to overall weight management by building muscle mass. Behavioural changes are pivotal for long-term success. Develop sustainable habits, like mindful eating and setting realistic goals. Keep track of your progress to stay motivated.
