WHILE many of us desire to be in a romantic relationship, we also fear being a part of one in reality. We all must have heard someone in our social group saying that I don’t want to be in a relationship, or that I am not ready yet to begin a relationship. There can be a variety of reasons why someone might not want to or be ready to begin a new relationship, which includes past relationships, trauma from past relationships, painful breakups, personal insecurities and many more.
However, whether someone wants to be in a relationship or not is solely based on their personal choice but one should always be aware of why they do not want to begin a new relationship, to face their insecurities and fears. Therefore, we have compiled a list of signs that will let you know if someone is not ready for a relationship and why.
1. Feelings For Ex
One of the prominent and common reasons for this situation can be that you still have feelings for your ex-partner and you haven’t moved on from them yet. In this case, it is important to give yourself enough time to get past that phase and remind yourself of the reasons for your breakup.
2. Major Life Transitions
Life happens and we tend to flow with it. Every person goes through some major life transitions that need their complete attention and care. In such situations, being in a relationship can be distracting. According to Citizen Advocates, there's a long list of common life changes to take into account. If you're in the process of relocating to a new place, you've just been diagnosed with a severe illness, you're in the process of going through a divorce, you're in a recovery program for an addiction, or you're in between jobs, you might not be in the ideal position to date someone new.

3. Busy Schedule
Being in a relationship demands time and effort. If you feel that you have too much to look after and you would not be able to take time out for your partner, then it is better to be single and concentrate on your work rather than being with someone and making them feel ignored. Relationship experts explain that you can make time for some you are interested in or love while running errands. However, it does not work in every case.
4. Exploring Yourself
Being aware of your own identity, dreams, fears, and hopes is an integral part of life. If you are in the stage of life where you aren't happy with yourself, you have deep insecurities, and you are practising self-love, then staying single and doing so can be the right route.
5. Commitment Issues
Good Therapy explains that the fear of commitment is usually rooted in traumatic experiences including abandonment or infidelity in past relationships. While Healthline states that those with commitment issues demonstrate a stark resistance to getting involved in any long-term relationships. The best thing to do when struggling with commitment issues is to start working on inner healing.
