It commemorates the resurrection of life after the death of Christ, as described in the new testament. It is observed on the third day after Good Friday. Easter concludes the 'Passion of Christ'-- a fourty days period of fasting. For many Christians, the week before Easter is considered holy as it contains the days of Triddum, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. This year Easter will be celebrated on April 12.
The day marks the victory of Lord Jesus over death. His resurrection makes him the 'Son of God'. 'He is risen' is a powerful proclamation of this joyful day, signifying his resurrection.
