Holi is celebrated to signfy the victory of good over evil. It is believed that demon king Hiranyakashipu, in order to take revenge from Lord Vishnu for killing his brother, almost eradicated all his worshippers. However, his own son Prahlada was a big devotee of Lord Vishnu.
Hiranyakashipu, enraged with the fact, tried to kill his own son. He asked his sister Holika to sit with Prahlada on fire in order to kill him. Holika had a special clothe which protected her from fire. However, the opposite happened and Prahlada was saved by Lord Vishnu again.
Soon Lord Vishnu appeared in his Narasimha avatar and killed Hiranyakashipu and ended his cruel rule. Thus, Holi is celebrated across India!
