As temperatures soar during the summer months, heat rashes, also known as prickly heat or miliaria, have become a common skin woe for many. These tiny red bumps, often accompanied by itching or a prickling sensation, usually occur when sweat gets trapped in blocked pores, leading to inflammation and discomfort. Areas like the neck, back, chest, armpits and inner thighs are particularly prone to these rashes, especially in hot and humid climates. While heat rashes are typically not serious, they can be extremely irritating and, if left untreated, may lead to secondary infections.
However, heat rashes are both treatable and preventable with the right skincare and lifestyle measures. There are several effective strategies to keep the skin healthy and rash-free. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Ms. Lalita Arya, CEO, Dermalogy Care, shares some tips and treatments to not only soothe heat rashes but also prevent them from making a comeback during the sweaty months ahead.
Why Do Heat Rashes Occur?
Heat rashes happen when sweat gets trapped under your skin, usually due to hot, humid
weather or tight clothing. This results in inflammation, itching, and tiny red bumps, often on the
back, neck, underarms or areas where skin folds. Ms. Lalita Arya states, “While they’re not dangerous, they can be incredibly uncomfortable, especially for people who spend a lot of time outdoors or wear synthetic fabrics.”

Prevention Tips For Heat Rashes In Summer
Stay Dry And Cool
It sounds obvious, but keeping your body cool is your first line of defence. Wear loose,
breathable cotton clothes, and avoid stepping out during peak heat hours (12 PM to 3 PM).
Switch To Lightweight Skincare
Ditch heavy creams and opt for oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturisers. Look for ingredients
like aloe vera, niacinamide, or calamine that calms inflammation without clogging pores.

Keep The Sweat In Check
Regular cold showers and body powders (talc-free) can reduce sweat accumulation in skin
folds. Also, change clothes immediately after a workout or outdoor activity.
Treating Heat Rashes At Home
Mild rashes usually subside within a few days. Here are some gentle remedies you can try:
- Aloe Vera Gel: Cools and soothes the skin instantly.
- Calamine Lotion: Reduces itching and redness.
- Cold Compress: A simple ice pack wrapped in cloth can reduce inflammation.
- Avoid Scratching: As tempting as it may be, scratching can worsen irritation or cause
- Infection.

When To See A Dermatologist
If the rash turns painful, forms pus-filled bumps, or lasts more than a week, it’s time to consult a professional. Prolonged heat rash can lead to secondary bacterial infections if ignored.
Heat rashes may seem minor, but for many, they impact daily comfort and confidence. With a
little awareness, breathable choices, and some dermatologist-backed care, you can enjoy
summer without the sting.
