KNOWN AS the ‘first Indian woman to go to space’, Kalpana Chawla made her name in history. She was born in Karnal, India, on March 17, 1962, to parents Banarasi Lal Chawla and Sanjyothi Chawla, Kalpana Chawla was the youngest of four children. Her birth anniversary is celebrated every year on March 17 across the country as a tribute to her immense strength and valour.

She had an immense interest in writing poetry and participated in school dances. She also played outdoor games like volleyball and adapted herself to the latest fashion. KALPANA Chawla was the first ever Indian woman to go to space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator. Her second flight was on STS-107, the final flight of Columbia, in 2003.
