Do you know that around 240,000 plastic fragments can be found in a seemingly harmless one-liter plastic water bottle? All of these pieces, which are frequently tiny and are known as microplastics, are the outcome of the plastic substance breaking down over time. These microscopic particles are released into the water within these bottles when they are subjected to external conditions such as heat and sunshine.
Also, this raises two concerns: first, the microplastics may release toxic substances into the water, which could have an impact on human health; second, they may exacerbate the widespread problem of plastic pollution. These particles have an adverse effect on ecosystems and species because of their difficulty in filtering them out, which emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable alternatives and appropriate plastic disposal procedures.

Not just that, but plastic pollution in oceans and waterways further harms marine life and ecosystems. Choosing reusable and eco-friendly alternatives can mitigate these harmful effects, promoting both individual health and environmental sustainability.

Dr. Sunil Havannavar, who is a senior consultant in internal medicine at Manipal Hospital Sarjapur Road in Bengaluru, exclusively told Jagran English that a one-liter water bottle contains around 240,000 plastic fragments.
According to Dr. Sunil, "In the current era, plastic, particularly single-use plastics, surrounds us. It poses significant danger. The plastic we use for bottling the water and packing the food, and hence, especially when the plastic comes in contact with the food, especially hot food, the plastic chemicals get into the food, and most of the chemicals that are used in the making of the plastic are carcinogenic or oncogenic. Therefore, these pose significant dangers."

In addition, he said, "Prolonged contact with plastic, whether in bottled water, soil, or the sea (for instance, in seafood), results in the accumulation of various chemicals present in the plastic, contributing to soil contamination. There is a lot of contamination in the seawater, and this all leads to health issues. So it's very important to find an alternative to plastic so that we can avoid all the hazards that can happen because of the contamination of plastic. Also, microplastics can find their way into ecosystems, affecting marine life and terrestrial environments. The consequences of plastic pollution on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health emphasize the urgency of addressing plastic consumption and promoting eco-friendly alternatives."

At last, Dr. Sunil said, "Encouraging responsible disposal practices and promoting alternatives to single-use plastics are key components in addressing the root causes of this pervasive problem. In conclusion, understanding the depth of plastic contamination, implementing effective strategies, and fostering public awareness are integral steps in mitigating the widespread issue of plastic pollution in water sources."
