Delhi Heat Alert: Delhi woke up with scorching heat on June 10, with real-feel temperature or heat index soaring over 45°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues an orange alert for the next two days, warning people to stay cautious and take steps to protect themselves from the ongoing heatwave. IMD has stated that the very hot weather will persist in Delhi until at least June 12. The air quality in the capital was recorded in the ‘poor’ category on Monday with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 235 at 4 PM, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data revealed. The intense heatwaves around the city may likely increase the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration and heat strokes, particularly among groups like children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
What Is A Heatwave?
A heatwave is a lengthy stretch of unusually hot weather, sometimes with considerable humidity. When the highest temperature in India crosses 40 degrees in the plains, 37 degrees along the coast and 30 degrees in the hills as as long as 4.5 degrees higher than the average, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) declares a heatwave.
It becomes extremely essential to manage the body heat, stay hydrated and adopt cooling lifestyle habits to ensure safety during these dangerously hot days. Here are some tips to stay safe and reduce body heat amid heat waves.
Precautions To Take During Heatwaves
Stay Hydrated
During these hottest days with the loo blowing across the city, it is important to stay hydrated, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Apart from drinking water, incorporate hydrating liquids like coconut water, buttermilk and others to replenish the electrolytes lost through sweat, rehydrate and reenergise the body. Avoid drinks like caffeine or alcohol, as they can dehydrate the body. People must also include water-rich foods like cucumber and watermelon in their diet and also eat meals that are light on the stomach.
Limit Sun Exposure
Unless and until absolutely necessary, avoid going out in the sun during peak heat hours, that is, between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM. When going out, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and carry an umbrella and use sunscreen to save yourself from the intense heat.
Limit Physical Activity
Amid the ongoing heat waves, it is important to avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours. Opt for low-intensity exercises in the mornings or in the evenings when the temperature is cooler. Intense workouts can make people prone to heat-related illnesses and potentially life-threatening conditions like heatstroke. Also, while doing physical activity, keep the body hydrated.

Wear Breathable Clothes
It is advisable to wear loose, lightly coloured, breathable clothes during the hotter days. Opt for clothes made with fabrics like cotton and linen for better airflow. Do not forget to wear a hat and sunglasses when going outdoors in the sunlight.

Try Cooling Techniques
Try cooling compresses on pulse points like wrists, neck, chest and temples or soaking the feet in cool water can quickly lower the body's temperature. Also, use curtains or blinds to block direct sunlight. Utilise fans, coolers or air conditioning if available. Ensure proper ventilation to allow hot air to escape.
