Due to the way it affects the neurological system, spinal stenosis—a disorder in which the spinal canal narrows—highlights the significance of this. This constriction may impose strain on the spinal cord and nerves, which may result in pain, numbness, and weakness in different body areas. Since it is a common condition, particularly in older people, knowing how important it is is essential for early discovery and treatment.

People with spinal stenosis can have a reduction in symptoms and an enhancement in their quality of life with prompt diagnosis and adequate management, including physical therapy or surgery if required.

Dr.Puneet Girdhar, who is the Principal Director and Head of Ortho Spine Surgery and Chief of Robotics and Minimal Invasive Spine at BLK-MAX Superspecialty Hospital, exclusively told Jagran English about being unable to walk the same distances as before. It could be spinal stenosis.

According to Dr.Puneet, "As we age, it's not uncommon to notice changes in our ability to perform everyday activities, including walking. Some individuals may find that they are no longer able to cover the same distances as before, raising concerns about their mobility. One potential culprit behind this limitation is spinal stenosis, a condition that affects the spinal canal, leading to various symptoms, including difficulty walking."

Understanding Spinal Stenosis:

Spinal stenosis is a medical condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal, the space that houses the spinal cord and nerves. This narrowing can result from a variety of factors, such as age-related degeneration, herniated discs, or abnormal bone growth. As the spinal canal becomes more constricted, the nerves and spinal cord may become compressed, leading to a range of symptoms, including pain, numbness, and weakness.

Impact On Walking Ability:

One of the hallmark symptoms of spinal stenosis is difficulty walking, particularly over longer distances. Patients often report feeling fine when sitting or resting but experience pain, tingling, or a sense of heaviness when walking. This discomfort typically occurs in the lower back, buttocks, or legs and may be accompanied by a gradual loss of endurance and stamina.

Factors Contributing To Limited Mobility:

Spinal stenosis primarily affects the lumbar (lower) and cervical (upper) regions of the spine, making it challenging for individuals to maintain an upright posture and engage in activities that require prolonged standing or walking. The reduced space within the spinal canal can result in nerve compression, leading to pain signals being sent to the brain when the affected individual is in an upright position.

Seeking Diagnosis And Treatment

If someone experiences a decline in their ability to walk the same distances as before, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Diagnosing spinal stenosis often involves a combination of a medical history review, physical examinations, and imaging studies such as MRI or CT scans.

Treatment options for spinal stenosis aim to alleviate symptoms and improve overall mobility. Non-surgical approaches may include physical therapy, pain management techniques, and lifestyle modifications. In more severe cases, surgical interventions like decompression surgery may be recommended to create more space within the spinal canal.

At last Dr.Puneet said, "The inability to walk the same distances as before can be a sign of various health conditions, and spinal stenosis is one potential culprit. Seeking prompt medical attention for an accurate diagnosis and implementing appropriate treatment strategies can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals experiencing these challenges, allowing them to regain their mobility and enjoy an active lifestyle."
