Skincare To Avoid In Monsoon:  While the monsoon season may come like a refreshing break from intense summer heat, the constant rains and humidity do take a toll on your skin. Humid weather causes an increase in sebum production and promotes the formation of acne and enlarged pores. Some people do not make any changes in their skincare routine throughout all the seasons, which might worsen their skin condition.

Which Ingredients Should You Avoid In Monsoon Skincare?

Here is a list of ingredients that need to be excluded in the monsoon season and must be replaced with others, for a healthy and refreshing glow, in damp and sweaty weather:

1. Heavy Occlusives And Petrolatum-Based Ingredients

Mineral oil, petroleum jelly, and lanolin create a heavy layer on the skin. These occlusives are beneficial when skin is extremely dry, but when the air is humid, they can be too heavy and result in pore clogging and acne breakouts in oily and combination skin types. Use lighter and non-comedogenic moisturisers instead.

2. Overuse Of Strong Chemical Exfoliants

Strong exfoliants such as concentrated glycolic acid peels and salicylic acid may weaken the protective skin barrier when used frequently. A humid environment does not mean lower levels of air pollution or microbes; thus, the chances of irritation and inflammation will grow. Choose mild forms of exfoliation instead.

3. Alcohol-Heavy Toners And Astringents

Toners with denatured alcohol or high ethanol concentration can irritate by drying out skin and increasing its oil production. In the monsoon season, this can cause the vicious cycle of oily skin and sensitivity. Go for hydrating toners that have glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or rose water.

4. Strong Synthetic Fragrances And Essential-Oil Overload

Fragrance chemicals and overconcentrated essential oils can irritate the skin in sensitive periods. Fragrance-free formulas or natural scents (which have low irritant value) are better suited for daily use in humid weather.

5. Thick, Greasy Sunscreens And Oil-Based Makeup

Certain formulas might be too heavy and mix with sweat and sebum, causing clogged pores. Prefer gel-based or matte finish sunscreens that are marked as non-comedogenic. Mineral (zinc oxide) sunscreens in light formulas will be effective.

What An Expert Suggests?

“Many people continue using the same skincare products throughout the year, but the monsoon season calls for a few changes. With increased humidity, the skin tends to produce more oil, making heavy creams and greasy formulations less suitable, especially for oily or acne-prone skin.”

According to Dr Nagaraj Kamath, Associate Professor, Dept of Kriya Sharir (Ayurveda Physiology), SDMCAH, Hassan.

“Ingredients such as petroleum jelly feel too heavy; also avoid overusing strong exfoliating acids like glycolic acid or salicylic acid and alcohol-based toners, as they can weaken the skin barrier. Products with strong artificial fragrances also trigger skin sensitivity. Instead, choose lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, niacinamide, or ceramides. From an Ayurveda perspective, monsoon skincare is about simplicity—using fewer, well-suited products that help the skin stay balanced, fresh, and comfortable despite the changing weather.”
