Putting time and money into a skincare routine only to watch the skin retaliate with breakouts, dryness, or dullness seems to be a nightmare. If you’re facing this, you’re not alone; the majority of us unconsciously sabotage our glow through daily habits. A dermatologist shares six silent culprits that people hardly mention. These mistakes disrupt your microbiome and speed up ageing. Knowing them is the first step in reclaiming radiant, healthy skin without frustration. Most skin problems don’t come from neglect; they result from overdoing it. The more you try to cure your skin, the more it resists.

In the pursuit of perfect complexions, social media trends push us toward 10-step routines that do a lot more harm than good. Yet, less is more if its foundation is science. Harsh cleansers strip skin of oils, which overcompensate for the loss by producing blemishes. Layering on too many products causes pores to clog, and missing out on sunscreen encourages premature wrinkle setting. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Shalini Dubey, Medical Affairs Manager, Iberia Pharmaceuticals, shares six common skincare mistakes that hardly any people talk about.

Common Skincare Mistakes That Ruin One’s Skin

Washing Face Too Many Times

People love the squeaky clean feeling. It feels clean, but it's bad for your skin. If you wash too much, you remove the natural oils from your skin. So, the skin will make more oil in order to fix it, leading to pimples and bumps. Wash twice a day - morning and night, with a gentle cleanser that is soft and feels nice and is good for your skin type. If your face is pulled taut later, that wash is too harsh for you.

Exfoliating Too Hard

Many people still believe strongly that scrubbing gives a glow. It doesn’t. It makes your skin irritated. Those coarse grains create small, invisible cuts. Exfoliate carefully once or twice a week using milder acids like salicylic acid, which are gentle on the skin and ideal for beginners.

Mixing Too Many Things

You see a reel, buy three serums, and use them together. Then you wake up with red, irritated skin. It is better to add one thing at a time. Give it at least 2 months and see how it feels. If your skin is reacting positively, then reassess, and add something else if you really need to. Switching too often resets that cycle every time. If you keep changing things all the time, your skin is never going to get the chance to acclimatise to them. If in doubt, stick with a clean, moisturise, and protect regimen.

Skipping Moisturiser On Oily Skin

This may seem odd, but oily skin does require water. If you do not moisturise, your skin begins to create additional oil to make up for dryness. Then you dislike it even more. The trick is not to skip it but to use something light. A gel or a soft lotion that soaks in fast. Once your skin feels balanced, it calms down on its own.

Forgetting Sunscreen

You think the sun only harms you when you are outdoors. It doesn’t. Light hits your skin even when you sit by a window or step out for five minutes. It builds up over time. That is why you see dullness and tiny lines even when you take care otherwise. Pick any sunscreen that suits you. SPF 30 or more is enough. Just put it on every morning. Reapply when you are out for a long.

Not Giving Your Skin Rest Days

Your skin doesn’t need to be busy all the time. Using too many actives or layering new products every few days confuses it and can lead to irritation and even damage your skin barrier. Your skin, just like your body, requires rest days. Days with a light routine, using barrier repair supporting ingredients such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid. This allows the skin barrier to repair, and your skin becomes more accustomed to being stable by itself. Gentle consistency always wins over intensity.

Healthy skin is quiet. It doesn’t sting or pull or burn. You don’t need ten steps or serums in gold bottles. Just look after your everyday. Wash it gently, don’t be aggressive, and stick to a routine that works for your skin type. Keep it feeling soft.
