World Pneumonia Day 2024: Pneumonia is a type of lung infection caused primarily by the buildup of fluid or mucus in the lungs, which can significantly impair the alveoli’s function. Alveoli are tiny air sacs that transfer oxygen to the bloodstream. Contrary to popular belief, pneumonia is not contagious. Various factors contribute to this condition, including pathogens, bacteria, fungi, existing lung disease, asthma, excessive smoking, prior use of a ventilator, and respiratory infections.

Millions of people in India and worldwide are affected by pneumonia each year. Taking proactive steps can help prevent this lung infection. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Sandeep Kadian, an Intensivist, General Physician, and Chest Physician at AIMS Hospital in Dombivli, shared ways to prevent pneumonia.

What Are The Simple Ways To Prevent Pneumonia?

Get Vaccinated:

Vaccination can help prevent pneumonia. There are two types of pneumonia vaccines: the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) and the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). Those at higher risk, such as people with weakened immune systems, HIV, smoking habits, or certain health conditions, are advised to get vaccinated.

Practice Good Hygiene:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use a sanitizer. This includes after using the restroom, blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, and before eating. Using a tissue or handkerchief when sneezing or coughing can help prevent the spread of infection. Dispose of used tissues immediately.

Quit Smoking:

Smoking can damage the lungs over time, making individuals more susceptible to infections like pneumonia. Quitting smoking is one of the best decisions for lung health. Secondhand smoke can also be harmful, so it’s best to avoid areas where people are smoking.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle:

A balanced, nutritious diet can help boost the immune system. Incorporate foods rich in essential nutrients, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, lentils, and proteins. Lifestyle modifications like avoiding smoking, eating well, exercising regularly, staying up-to-date on vaccinations, and getting adequate sleep can also support lung health.

Address Health Issues Promptly:
