World Stroke Day 2023: Every year, the global campaign of World Stroke Day is observed on October 29 worldwide. The day aims to understand the nature and high rates of stroke and raise awareness about the prevention and treatment of this health condition. The rising incidents of strokes in developing and developed countries have escalated the burden on the healthcare system.
The main objective of World Stroke Day is to understand whether strokes can be prevented, and if is recovery truly possible post an episode. To answer some frequently asked questions about stroke, Jagran English spoke to Dr Gaurish Kenkre, General Manager and Center Head, Atharv Ability, Neuro Rehabilitation Center to get insights on the same.

According to Dr Kenkre, preventing strokes demands a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, managing hypertension, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol intake are fundamental. Monitoring cholesterol, managing diabetes, and maintaining a healthy weight are other essential components. Stress management techniques and ensuring sufficient sleep play crucial roles.

Chances Of Recovery After Stroke
Dr Kenkre said that the journey after a stroke is a transformative one. Despite its life-altering impact, the human brain possesses an incredible ability to heal. Rehabilitation stands at the core of this process. Neurorehabilitation, a multidisciplinary endeavour, involves physiotherapy, robotics, and cognitive behavioural therapy. Swift and targeted intervention is paramount for recovery.
Another important aspect involves focusing on the mental aspects of stroke which require holistic care, encompassing therapy to rebuild confidence and embrace a future that presents the possibility of recovery.

According to the Stroke Association, stroke strikes every five minutes, 100,000 people have strokes each year and there are 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK. In order to prevent and treat strokes, Dr Kenkre states that with the right rehabilitation, unwavering support, and determination, stroke does not signify an endpoint, but a profound new beginning.
