A new case of zombie deer disease detected in the United States' Yellow National Park has left all animals confused and drooling. The disease was detected in the carcass of an adult mule deer buck found near Yellowstone Lake in the park's southeastern section, according to park officials. In addition, one deer that died and was seized in Cody, Wyoming, as part of a population study, sported a GPS collar, allowing officials to identify its death on the Promontory landmass in mid-October 2023.

The National Park Service said that, "In coordination with Yellowstone staff, WGFD located the carcass on the Promontory, a landmass that separates the South and Southeast arms of Yellowstone Lake, and collected samples for testing. The samples tested positive for CWD based on multiple diagnostic tests performed at WGFD's Wildlife Health Laboratory."

What Is The Zombie Deer Disease?

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prion illness that affects North American deer, elk, reindeer, sika deer, and moose, including Canada, the United States, Norway, and South Korea. An infected animal can take up to a year to show symptoms such as weight loss, tripping, listlessness, and other neurologic problems. CWD can harm animals of various ages, and some may die before the disease manifests itself.

There are no CWD therapies or vaccinations available. There have been no reports of CWD infection in humans. However, certain animal research suggests that CWD poses a risk to non-human primates, such as monkeys, that consume CWD-infected meat or come into contact with infected deer or elk brain or body fluids, according to CDC.

Also, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they said that,"this disease can actually take over a year for all the symptoms in the deer to fully develop, and it all starts with the symptoms of weight loss, losing all the energy, and stubling arpund. Not just this, but also current, the CDC has confirmed that there is no cure or vaccine."
