A special cleanliness drive launched by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to transform Connaught Place (CP) into the country's cleanest and most organised commercial centre has yielded mixed results. While conditions have improved in some areas, significant parts of the market remain unclean due to persistent public negligence.
Campaign Objectives And Measures
The daily campaign aims to keep the inner and outer circles, lanes, parks and market areas completely free of litter, dust and dirt. To achieve this, officials stated that the sanitation system has been strengthened.
Enhanced Deployment: The shifts of sanitation workers have been extended, and team deployment has been increased to cater to thousands of visitors.
Infrastructure: Mechanical sweeping has been introduced, and more dustbins have been installed throughout the market area.
Ground Reality: Filth and Stains Despite the administration's efforts, filth is easily visible in many sections. The progress of the campaign is being slowed by public negligence.
Spit Stains: In several parts of the Outer Circle, walls are marred by visible stains from gutkha and paan (betel leaf).
Open Dumping: Small piles of rubbish were found in various lanes, indicating that waste is being thrown by the roadside instead of in designated bins.
Worst Affected Areas: The filth and foul odours are most prominent in F Block and H Block, though other blocks also remain unclean due to shopkeepers and visitors throwing rubbish in the open.

Public Reaction And Enforcement
Ayushi Singh, a shopper in Connaught Place, remarked that alongside regular cleaning, raising public awareness is crucial. She noted that both the administration and the public must play an equal part in maintaining cleanliness.
Acknowledging that a lack of public cooperation is affecting the sanitation system, the NDMC has begun taking strict action. Fines are being regularly imposed on those found littering. Officials also confirmed that the campaign to clean paan spit stains will be intensified in the coming days.
