The paramedical staff union of the Delhi Health Department has opposed the government’s alleged plan to re-employ retired paramedical personnel in government hospitals to address staff shortages.
The National Paramedical Health Association (NPHA) has claimed that the proposed move is being used as an alternative to regular recruitment. According to the union, re-appointing retired employees as consultants on a contractual basis will adversely impact employment opportunities for thousands of qualified and trained youths awaiting regular appointments.

The union alleged that a large number of sanctioned posts in Delhi’s government hospitals remain vacant, while only a small proportion of the workforce is employed permanently, with the majority working on contract.
NPHA further stated that the Health Department has issued directions to government hospitals to temporarily re-engage retired lab technicians, nurses, and other paramedical and support staff, subject to their willingness and satisfactory service records.

The union has demanded that the government scrap the proposal to recall retired personnel and instead fill vacant posts through regular and permanent recruitment. It has urged the Health Department to conduct appointments through examinations held by the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) to ensure transparency and long-term staffing solutions.
