The Public Works Department (PWD) has set a deadline of February to March next year for the completion of two new bus depots currently under construction in East Vinod Nagar and Kirari. These projects are a key component of the Delhi government's strategy to expand and modernize public transport infrastructure to meet growing passenger demand.

Progress Review And Timeline

During a recent review meeting chaired by PWD Minister Pravesh Verma, it was reported that more than 50 per cent of the civil work at both sites has already been completed. The department aims to finalize the remaining work by the beginning of next year, with construction progress being monitored on a weekly basis.

Current onsite activities include the construction of boundary walls, depot layouts, administrative block structures, staff facilities, and parking areas designed for low-floor buses.

Strategic Importance

Once completed, these depots are expected to significantly reduce operational pressure on existing Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) facilities:

East Vinod Nagar Depot: Will support and streamline bus operations in the trans-Yamuna area.

Kirari Depot: Will boost bus frequency and operations on Outer Delhi routes.

The new depot in Kirari, for which the foundation stone was laid in 2023, is being developed across 5.4 acres with a capacity to park 140 buses. It will be equipped with modern amenities, including electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities.

The estimated cost for the Kirari project is approximately Rs 160 crore, broken down as follows:

Rs 40 crore: Paid to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for land acquisition.

Rs 40 crore: Allocated to the PWD for construction.

Rs 80 crore: Earmarked for electrification works.
