West Bengal: Prabhas Mondal, one of the key accused in the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in the Baruipur suburb of Kolkata, West Bengal, was killed in a police encounter. He had been arrested by the Bengal Police on Monday.

According to the news agency ANI, Mondal was taken back to the scene of the crime around midnight for the reconstruction of the incident. During the reconstruction, he attempted to snatch a weapon from the police and opened fire at them. In retaliation, the police fired back. Mandal was shot during the encounter and later succumbed to his injuries.

"Prabhas Mondal, the accused in the Baruipur rape and murder case, was killed in a police encounter. While the crime scene was being reconstructed, he attempted to snatch a weapon from the police and open fire at them. In retaliation, the police fired back, striking Prabhas; he was declared dead at the hospital," Baruipur SP told ANI.

'Taking All Necessary Steps To Maintain Law and Order': Suvendu Adhikari

Earlier on Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that the government and police are taking all necessary steps to maintain law and order following the alleged rape and murder of a girl in the Baruipur area.

What The Post-Mortem Report Revealed?

The preliminary post-mortem report of the 11-year-old girl has confirmed the brutality of the crime. According to the report, the victim sustained head injuries from being struck with a heavy object, and her body had scratches, bite marks, and horrific injuries to her genitals.

The report further revealed that she was still alive when she was stuffed into a sack and thrown into the pond. Water ingress caused swelling in her lungs and abdomen, and the death was caused by drowning.

Baruipur Rape-Murder Case

The incident occurred at Suryapur Haat in the Dhapdhapi-2 Panchayat area, under the jurisdiction of the Baruipur police station. The victim had left her home on Saturday evening to buy groceries but did not return. Her body was recovered from a nearby pond on Sunday morning. CCTV footage from that night showed four men taking the minor away.
