After the body of an 11-year-old girl, who went missing a day ago, was recovered from a pond in the Baruipur area of West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Sunday, an angry mob lynched a man on rape-murder charges, police said.

On Sunday morning, the victim's body was found stuffed in a sack in Surjyapur Haat area. The discovery sparked a massive protest by locals who blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, burnt tyres, put the body on the road and vandalised a few police vehicles, demanding the arrest of the accused persons, a senior officer said.

Inspector General of Police, Presidency Range, Kankarprasad Barui said that the angry locals beat a man to death on the accusation of his involvement in the girl's death.

It was only after the IG's assurance that the blockade was later lifted. Acting in the matter, the police said they arrested four people.

Addressing the protestors on a megaphone, the IG announced, "Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari called me up to take action against all the culprits, and they would be punished."
