The weather department on Friday said the southwest monsoon has advanced into most parts of West Bengal, except the western tip of Purulia district, bringing relief from hot and humid conditions. Thunderstorms and rain are likely in Kolkata and some districts in the southern parts of the state on Friday, the India Meteorological Department said.

It said that owing to favourable wind patterns and strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, rain and thunderstorms in southern Bengal and heavy showers in the sub-Himalayan districts in the northern part of the state are very likely till June 15.

The southwest monsoon has advanced into most parts of West Bengal, except some areas of the westernmost district, Purulia, and is likely to cover the remaining areas within the next two to three days, the meteorological office said.

The IMD said the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar are likely to receive heavy rainfall during the next five days due to an active monsoon trough in the region. North Bengal's Malda and Haldia in Purba Medinipur district of the south received 66 mm rainfall each, the highest in the state in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Friday.

The other places which received significant rainfall during the period were Bardhaman (60 mm), Bankura (32 mm) and Jhargram (31 mm). According to the weather office, Kolkata, Purba, and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankra, Purulia, and Paschim Bardhaman are very likely to witness thunderstorms and rain on Friday.
