Bengaluru: A 31-year-old woman in Bengaluru allegedly died by suicide following months of physical and mental harassment over dowry demands from her husband and father-in-law. Following the incident, police have registered a case against the duo and launched an investigation into the matter.

From Love Marriage To Dowry Nightmare
The deceased has been identified as Maimunnisa, who worked as a part-time teacher at a private school. She had married 28-year-old Junaid, a designer in a factory and resident of Doddamavalli, on January 19, 2024. The couple had fallen in love and convinced their parents to agree to the marriage. According to The Times of India (TOI), the bride's family had given 45 grams of gold jewellery, a branded watch, and a scooter as dowry at the time of the wedding.
The deceased's father, Syed Khalid, stated that while Junaid initially treated Maimunnisa well, his behaviour changed later on. Junaid allegedly began taking away his wife's earnings and repeatedly subjected her to physical and mental harassment for dowry. The complainant further stated that Junaid's father, Nazir Ahmed, verbally abused, mentally tortured, and persistently pressured her to bring additional dowry.
Maimunnisa had reportedly informed her family multiple times about the harassment from her husband and father-in-law before taking the extreme step.
The Incident
The case took a tragic turn in the early hours of July 17, around 2:30 AM, when Junaid called Maimunnisa's father asking him to come to Victoria Hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital mortuary, Khalid found his daughter's body. Junaid informed him that Maimunnisa had allegedly hanged herself at their residence, the report added.
Following the incident, Khalid filed a formal complaint at the Kalasipalya Police Station, holding Junaid and his father, Nazir Ahmed, responsible for the death. Based on the complaint, the police arrested both Junaid and Ahmed, and they have been remanded to judicial custody.
