Nearly 431 people died by suicide in Maharastra’s Jalgaon in the past six months. An analysis of the deaths revealed that most people took the extreme step due to prolonged mental, financial, and societal stress. Another significant part of the data says that among these 29 people died by suicide as they were not getting married.
What Does Data Say?
The Jalgaon police said that an average of two to three people die by suicide each day in a district. The figures also revealed that the number of men dying by suicide is nearly ten times higher than that of women.
The cops asserted that they have the statistics of death for the past six months, from January 1 to June 30, 2026. The figures were alarming: 383 men died by suicide in the area. Among these, 8 were recorded to be minors. 29 women died by suicide; of these, 11 were minor girls.
When investigators analysed the number of deaths and their possible causes, it was revealed that at least 29 men in the district died by suicide for not being able to get married. Experts believe that changing social circumstances, rising expectations regarding marriage, economic instability, and mental stress are driving many young people into depression.
Why Are People Taking Such Extreme Step?
Initial investigation suggests that major causes driving people to commit suicides are family disputes, financial hardship, serious illness, substance abuse, mental stress, relationship failures, and other personal issues. Police state that while the circumstances in each case may differ, a lack of awareness regarding mental health has emerged as a significant challenge.
The rising mental stress, loneliness, and social pressure—particularly among the youth—are causes for concern. Experts believe that concrete efforts are needed to raise awareness about mental health, provide timely counseling, and ensure emotional support from families.
