Domestic LPG consumers across India will face a new requirement from October 1 to continue receiving government subsidy benefits on refill cylinders. Consumers whose biometric Aadhaar authentication is still pending will have to complete the verification process within the stipulated period.

Importantly, failure to complete the authentication will not stop LPG bookings or cylinder deliveries. However, the consumer will no longer receive the government subsidy and will have to pay the full market price for the refill.

Who Needs To Complete The Verification?

The new requirement applies only to domestic LPG consumers whose biometric Aadhaar authentication has not yet been completed.

Those who have already undergone biometric verification do not need to repeat the process. According to data from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, around 274.3 million active domestic LPG consumers had completed biometric Aadhaar authentication as of September 19.

The government has introduced the requirement to identify duplicate, fake and ineligible LPG connections and ensure that subsidy benefits reach eligible consumers.

What Happens If You Miss The Deadline?

Consumers who fail to complete biometric authentication before the applicable deadline will continue to receive LPG cylinders, but without the subsidy benefit.

The indirect subsidy of Rs 210 per cylinder will be discontinued for consumers whose verification remains pending. They will therefore have to purchase their refill cylinders at the prevailing market price.

The government also aims to prevent subsidised domestic LPG cylinders from being diverted for commercial or industrial use, including in hotels and restaurants.

Three Ways To Complete Aadhaar Authentication

Consumers can complete the biometric verification through their LPG distributor or using the oil companies' official digital platforms.

During home delivery: Consumers can complete biometric authentication when the delivery executive brings the cylinder. The delivery person's device can be used to record the consumer's fingerprint.

At the gas agency: Customers can visit their respective LPG distributor's office or showroom to complete Aadhaar verification.

Through mobile apps: The process can also be completed from home using the official applications of the respective oil companies, including IndianOil ONE, HelloBPCL and HP PAY.

Two Rules Consumers Must Follow

LPG cylinder bookings can only be made from the mobile number registered with the gas agency. Requests made through missed calls or SMS from an unregistered number will not be accepted.

Once a refill is booked, a four- or six-digit Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) will be sent to the consumer's registered mobile number. The code must be shared with the delivery executive when the cylinder arrives.

The delivery executive will enter the code into the relevant application, after which the delivery will be marked as completed.
