Bengal Politics: The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been facing a severe internal crisis following the defeat in the West Bengal Assembly polls. As per the reports, several party MLAs have skipped the meetings called by Banerjee in the past few days. The party members are reportedly unhappy due to the interference of political strategy firm I-PAC and the alleged authoritarian nature of general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The reports also suggest that a significant number of MLAs are looking for alternatives over the uncertain future.

As per the reports, the newly elected MLAs have held multiple meetings at Kolkata's MLA Hostel over the future of the party, reported News18. The reports also suggest that some of the senior leaders have also been discussing a possible organisational change to clean the party's image. The TMC recently suspended two of its MLAs, Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee, over the allegations of anti-party activities.

"Despite having been elected as a candidate nominated by the AITC, you have repeatedly failed to attend meetings convened by the authorised leadership of the party and have made yourself involved in anti-party activities," the party said in its statement.

Earlier last week, Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, in an interview with NDTV, predicted that the party will be finished shortly. He asserted that the party has lost its credibility at both the state and central levels over the years.

The reports suggest that the party leaders were unsatisfied with the functioning of the top brass for several years. However, back-to-back poll victories and the mass popularity of Mamata Banerjee kept them silenced. With the humiliating defeat in the recent polls, the voice of dissent has emerged louder than ever.

Mamata Banerjee has called for a protest by alleging that there was an organised attempt to break the party. She further asserted that the Trinamool will not compromise with discipline, adding that strict action will be taken against those who speak against the party line.
