It is common for many people to experience occasional burping or bloating after meals. However, if it happens too often, it might be a sign of something serious like gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD develops when the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus which is called the lower esophageal sphincter becomes weak or doesn’t close properly. This causes the stomach acid to move back up into the oesophagus and irritate it, causing frequent burping. Left untreated, GERD can lead to complications such as esophagitis, strictures or even Barrett's esophagus which increases the risk of esophageal cancer.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Sarthak Malik, Consultant - Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Manipal Hospital Dwarka, New Delhi listed common symptoms and ways to manage gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
What are the symptoms of GERD?
In addition to burping and bloating, GERD can cause symptoms like
Heartburn- A person will experience a burning sensation in the chest, especially after eating or while lying down.
Sour or Bitter Taste- Acid reflux can create a sour taste in the back of the mouth.
Chest pain or Discomfort- A person may feel chest pain that is like heart-related issues.
Nausea- A person may experience a feeling of sickness after eating
How to prevent or manage GERD?
1. Eat Smaller Meals- Avoid overeating and opt for smaller, more frequent meals to reduce pressure on the lower oesophagal sphincter (LES).
2. Avoid Trigger Foods- Common culprits include spicy foods, citrus fruits, chocolate, caffeine, and fatty or fried foods.
3. Maintain a Healthy Weight- Excess weight can increase abdominal pressure and worsen GERD symptoms.
4. Avoid Lying Down After Meals- Wait at least 2-3 hours before lying down to allow proper digestion.
5. Quit Smoking and Limit Alcohol- Both smoking and alcohol can weaken the LES, making acid reflux more likely.
Frequent burping or bloating after meals might seem like a minor inconvenience but it can be an early sign of GERD. Early diagnosis is important to prevent potential complications. Surgical procedures like fundoplication can provide effective relief in severe cases where lifestyle changes and medications fail. If you notice persistent symptoms, consult a gastroenterologist for a thorough evaluation.
