Rockstar Games parent company layoffs: Laying off employees is becoming more common these days, and it is a haunting reality, with tech firms leading the layoff race. Reports are now suggesting that Rockstar Games' parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has laid off its artificial intelligence team, which also includes the topmost official in the wing, its head of AI. How many employees lost their jobs remains unspecified; however, according to the former AI chief, the AI team of the company has been laid off. Previously Take-Two's chief, Strauss Zelnick, said a game like GTA 6 could not be made using AI.

The development has been confirmed by Mike Dicken on Friday, who served as the former head of AI; he said the whole team has been laid off. Dicken wrote in a LinkedIn post via Kotaku, “It's truly disappointing that I have to share with you that my time with T2 – and that of my team – has come to an end." “I will take the time in a week or so to make a more reflective post on my time with Zynga and T2, but for right now I would appreciate your help in finding these awesome talented folks new positions – especially in the current climate,” he added.

Luke Dicken had joined the company in January of 2025 as its AI head and had left his previous role as senior director of applied AI at Zynga after a decade. He expressed that the team was in pursuit of developing machine learning, DevOps, procedural content, product management and production as well, an all-rounded gave development pipeline. “We've been developing cutting-edge technology to support game development now for 7 years. These folks know how to match innovation and novel problem-solving approaches with strong product design chops to create systems that empower people throughout the development workflow,” Dicken added.

Apart from his journey above, Dicken also founded Ludic AI, a company that gives consultations on the use of AI in games and other adjacent and allied processes.

Layoffs In The Gaming Industry: AI To Blame?

This is not the only firm going after employees in the gaming industry, as only recently EA laid off its employees in the Battlefield teams; that is, after Battlefield 6 was a success. It seems like profit sharing is not in their blood yet. Epic Games, too, laid off 1,000 employees, the reason for which was less engagement with its most popular game, Fortnite.

AI In The Gaming Industry Can Just To Aid; It Can't Create Hits!

AI has been the centre of discussion lately, and with the boom of generative AI, anxiety and criticism both have taken a platform. Machine learning with AI has been an important component of game creation; for instance, it can be used to create concept art, text, etc., but this has been under fire from players. Take-Two's chief, Zelnick, has spoken about the use of AI in game development previously and has expressed that AI's impact on game development is "limited" as AI suits don't have "creativity" and will not be good enough to make hits like GTA that we have enjoyed. This echoes his sentiment from a previous statement in which he denied the use of generative AI cotent in making GTA 6.

“This company's products have always been built with machine learning and artificial intelligence. We've actually always been a leader in the space, and right now we have hundreds of pilots and implementations across our company, including within our studios. And we're already seeing instances where generative AI tools are driving costs and time efficiencies,” Strauss Zelnick said.
