The Uttar Pradesh government, under the MukhyamantriAwas Yojana Gramin, has extended housing benefits to the Sapera (denotified tribe) and Jogi (Other Backward Class) communities, placing them in the priority category for eligibility. This decision, announced by Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, aims to provide free housing to poor rural families who are either homeless, live in dilapidated or unbaked brick houses, or have been impacted by natural calamities.
Beneficiary Communities And Eligibility Changes
In addition to the Sapera and Jogi communities, the government has included 250 families from the Chero (Scheduled Caste) community in Chandauli and 200 impoverished families from the Jogi community in Kanpur Dehat in the priority list. The Sapera community members, in particular, reside in 13 village councils of Mathura, as well as in Prayagraj and Saharanpur. The eligibility age for destitute widows has also been increased from 40 to 50 years to expand the scheme's reach.
Progress And Achievements Of The Scheme
The Rural Development Department reports significant progress under the scheme. To date, 373,000 beneficiaries have been allocated permanent houses, with the construction of 355,000 houses already completed. Among the beneficiaries, 50,037 houses have been allocated to the Musahar community, 93,300 to those affected by natural calamities, 29,923 to the Kol community, 91,062 to persons with disabilities, and 41,854 to destitute widows.
