A five-member team from the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) has reached Gorakhpur to assess the progress of key projects related to water conservation, urban flood control, and riverfront development. The visit aims to ensure that local water bodies and their surrounding ecosystems are protected amid ongoing urban development.

The NIUA, which functions under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, is a major partner in the Water Resilient Cities and River City Alliance initiatives. As part of its review on Tuesday, the team inspected the under-construction Gadhaiya Nala project and suggested adding benches and children’s swings along the proposed road beside the drain. The team also recommended developing a Bhajan Sthal at Rajghat to enhance community engagement.

During their stay, the NIUA officials will hold meetings with Municipal Corporation authorities to discuss completed work and future development plans. The team is reviewing several prominent sites, including Gadhaiya Nala, Ramgarhtal, Chilua Tal, Ekla Dam, and Rajghat, with a special focus on measures taken to prevent urban flooding.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Durgesh Mishra said the NIUA team will submit a detailed report after inspections and consultations. The report will include recommendations for improving ongoing projects and implementing sustainable practices to support Gorakhpur’s environmentally friendly urban development.
