Even as people celebrated Diwali with lights and festivities, the district hospital’s emergency department remained overwhelmed with patients in Sant Kabir Nagar. From late Sunday evening until Tuesday night, the emergency ward was filled with people injured in firecracker incidents, road accidents, and other ailments.
According to hospital officials, a total of 113 patients were treated during this period, 14 with burn injuries from firecrackers and 99 injured in road accidents. Among them, 55 critically injured patients were referred to Gorakhpur Medical College for advanced treatment.

Doctors said most burn injuries resulted from anar bombs (fountain fireworks), with both children and adults among the victims. Dr LC Yadav of the district hospital said that a 10-bed burn unit had been set up before Diwali, and the medical staff were kept on high alert.
Most minor burn cases were treated on-site, while severe cases were referred for further care.
Surendra, a resident of Baghauli, said his nephew was injured while lighting an anar bomb but received prompt attention from the emergency staff. He praised the hospital team for their timely response and dedication amid the heavy rush.
