British authorities have charged a 49-year-old man with repeatedly drugging and raping his former wife over more than a decade and allegedly allowing other men to sexually abuse her, in a case that has shocked the UK and drawn comparisons with the infamous Gisèle Pelicot abuse case in France.

Philip Young, a resident of Swindon in southwest England, faces dozens of serious criminal charges linked to offences committed between 2010 and 2023. The Crown Prosecution Service and Wiltshire Police confirmed that Young has been charged with 56 offences, including multiple counts of rape and administering substances with the intent to stupefy or overpower his wife for sexual purposes.

Allegations Span 13 Years

According to investigators, Young is accused of systematically drugging his then-wife, Joanne Young, and sexually assaulting her over a prolonged period. Police allege that he also facilitated her abuse by inviting other men to take part while she was incapacitated.

Five additional men, aged between 31 and 61, have been charged in connection with the case. They face allegations including rape, sexual assault by penetration, and sexual touching of the same survivor during the same time frame. The alleged crimes came to light following what police described as a “complex and extensive investigation”, involving specialist officers and multiple support agencies.

In a rare and courageous decision, Joanne Young has chosen to waive her lifelong legal right to anonymity, which is automatically granted to victims of sexual offences under UK law.

Wiltshire Police Detective Superintendent Geoff Smith said the decision was made after careful consideration and extensive discussions with officers and support services. He confirmed that Joanne has been supported by specially trained officers since the outset of the investigation. Authorities said her choice to be named reflects a desire to reclaim her identity and speak openly as the case proceeds through the justice system.

Case Echoes Global Abuse Scandals

Philip Young remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. The five other accused men have been released on bail and are also due to appear before the same court. Police have not disclosed when Philip and Joanne Young divorced, citing legal sensitivities.
