The United States on Sunday released the first video of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro hours after capturing him. In the video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Maduro is seen handcuffed and walking inside the headquarters of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in New York. The Venezuelan president also wished the US soldiers a Happy New Year and good night. Maduro, along with his wife, were brought to New York city where two are reportedly likely to face criminal charges in a narco-terrorism conspiracy case.

While addressing a press conference, US President Donald Trump stated that the US will run Venezuela temporarily. “We're going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition," Trump said. “We can’t take a chance in letting somebody else just take over what he left or left off,” he added. The US president also indicated that decisions were being made on Venezuela’s future leadership, including whether opposition figures could assume power.

Earlier on Saturday, several explosions were reported across Caracas, with low-flying aircraft seen over several neighbourhoods. At least seven blasts were heard during the operation, which lasted under 30 minutes. The Venezuelan officials accused the US of bombing military installations and disturbing peace in the region. Ruling party leader Nahum Fernandez told The Associated Press that Maduro and his wife were captured at their residence within the Ft. Tiuna military complex.

The Constitutional Chamber of Venezuela's Supreme Court ordered that Vice President Delcy Rodriguez will assume the role of acting vice president. "The office of President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in order to guarantee administrative continuity and the comprehensive defense of the Nation," the court stated.

The operation has sent shockwaves across the region and beyond. Colombia moved troops to its border, anticipating possible refugee flows. Cuba and Russia condemned the strike as a violation of sovereignty, while European leaders urged restraint and respect for international law.
