A stronghold of the Pawar family since the 1990s, Baramati now witnesses a fierce contest following the split in the NCP, founded by his uncle, Sharad Pawar. Ajit Pawar is up against Sharad Pawar's grand nephew Yugendra Shriniwas Pawar (33), representing the Maha Vikas Aghadi on the NCP (SP) ticket.
Backed by Sharad Pawar, Yugendra's candidacy marks a pivotal moment in the family rift. Ajit Pawar (65), has campaigned intensively after his wife Sunetra lost the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar's daughter. Despite his 2019 assembly election landslide win by over 1.65 lakh votes, Ajit Pawar faces an uphill task in a politically charged contest that could reshape Baramati's political landscape.
