In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the BJP and Mahayuti’s performance in the Maharashtra Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections, saying the outcome reflected public support for development-oriented governance.

The State Election Commission released a detailed party-wise breakup late Sunday night. Of the 207 municipal council president posts won by the ruling alliance, the BJP secured 117, Shiv Sena 53 and the NCP 37. On the Opposition side, the Congress won 28 posts, Shiv Sena (UBT) nine and NCP (SP) seven. Registered parties won four posts, unrecognised parties 28, while Independents secured five seats.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission said the ruling alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP secured 207 municipal council president posts in the local body elections. In comparison, the Opposition combine of the Congress, NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) won 44 president posts.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the results once again reflected strong public support for the ruling Mahayuti alliance. He congratulated voters and party workers, and said the performance pointed towards continued success in upcoming civic polls. Speaking after the results, Shinde said, “I congratulate the voters. The Mahayuti was successful in the Lok Sabha, the Legislative Assembly, and the Municipal Corporation elections. There are indications that the Mahayuti alliance will also be successful in the upcoming municipal elections. The BJP scored a century, and the Shiv Sena scored a half-century. Some people said the Shiv Sena was limited to Thane, but now it has spread from Chandrapur to Bandra (all over Maharashtra). My gratitude to all our elected representatives, ministers, and MLAs. Thank you to my dear sisters and brothers, and congratulations to all the party workers. I also congratulate Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis; the BJP has also achieved great success. The Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) secured a victory in the Taloda Municipal Council, which has 21 wards, with Bhagyashree Chaudhary elected as the council president.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance is on course for a strong win in the Maharashtra local body elections, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party. Around 75 per cent of the mayors elected so far are from the Mahayuti, while BJP candidates have secured mayoral posts in 129 cities.

Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT), have largely accepted defeat and accused the Election Commission of “facilitating” the Mahayuti’s victory.

Reacting to the outcome, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “We are happy that we were able to fulfil the trust shown in us by Modiji's positivity and our leaders Amit Shahji, Naddaji, and Navinji.”

The ruling Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and the NCP, is leading in multiple municipal councils in Pune district. The alliance is ahead in the Lonavala Municipal Council, which has 27 wards, as counting continues.

Mahayuti candidates are also in the lead in the Saswad Municipal Council, which consists of 22 wards, and in the Shirur Municipal Council, which has 24 wards.

In the Talegaon Dabhade Municipal Council, the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading independently. The council has a total of 28 wards.

As vote counting continued for the Maharashtra local body elections on Sunday, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) said they had managed to hold on to their traditional strongholds in Chandrapur and Sangli districts.

At the same time, early trends indicated an advantage for the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) and the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction).

Senior Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar said the party secured a major victory in the Brahmapuri municipal council in Chandrapur district. The Congress won the council president’s post along with 21 of the 23 seats, while the BJP and the NCP picked up one seat each.

In Sangli district, NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil claimed a sweeping win in the Urun-Ishwarpur municipal council. According to him, the party bagged 23 seats and also retained the position of council president.

While the BJP seems to be securing a big win in the Maharashtra local body election results, Congress and NCP ( Sharad Pawar) claimed to have retained their party bastions in Chandrapur and Sangli districts.

The BJP is leading Rajura, Bhadravati, Ballarpur, Gadchandur, Mul, Nagbhid, Chimoor and Ghugghus municipal councils of Chandrapur district.

In Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar) district, the Bharatiya Janata Party is in the lead in both the Rahata and Pathardi municipal councils. Meanwhile, the ruling Mahayuti alliance is also ahead in the Shrirampur and Shrigonda municipal councils within the district.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Ajit Pawar is in the lead in the Indapur Municipal Council elections. In the mayoral race, NCP candidate Bharat Shah, supported by the Ajit Pawar faction, is ahead by 157 votes against Pradeep Garatkar, the nominee from the Krishna Bhima Vikas Aghadi, after the second round of counting.

The mayoral contest remains competitive, with NCP candidates from the Ajit Pawar faction also holding leads in most of the remaining 20 corporator seats. Of the 6 seats declared so far, the NCP Ajit Pawar faction has secured 5, while 1 seat has been won by the Krishna Vikas Aghadi.

Early trends from the Maharashtra local body elections indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party is ahead in 51 positions for the presidents of municipal councils and nagar panchayats.

In Mahad, Raigad district, a head-to-head battle between the ruling alliance partners, Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party, resulted in the Shiv Sena candidate winning the municipal council president position, as per HT reported.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has won a majority of the district council president positions in Satara, claiming five out of 10 seats.

In the Dahanu Municipal Council elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) encountered an early setback as Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) candidate Rajendra Machhi surged ahead. Machhi, who is the Shinde Sena's contender for the municipal council president, was leading by 1,711 votes in the latest tally, while BJP district president Bharat Rajput trailed behind.

Meanwhile, in Palghar’s municipal council elections, Shiv Sena is currently in the lead, with BJP and UBT in second and third places, according to reports by Vishal Rajemahadik.

Maharashtra Local Body Election Results 2025 Live: Members and presidents of Dondaicha Municipal Council in Dhule and Angar Nagar Panchayat in Solapur were elected unopposed, and the polls for the post of Jammer municipal president also remained a no-contest affair.

The BJP expressed confidence ahead of the Maharashtra local body election results, with party spokesperson Keshav Upadhye presenting a comparative overview of past and current civic elections.

In a social media post, Upadhye shared the results of the previous round of polls, stating: “Previous 246 Municipal Councils and 42 Municipal Panchayats together total number of members – 5739. Previous party-wise number of winning members… BJP – 1602, Shiv Sena – 844, Congress – 1102, NCP – 936, MNS – 12, BSP – 27, Other – 601, Ind – 569, Aghadi – 46.”

He went on to say, “In the 2025 election for 288 Mayors and 6952 members, 12–12 Municipal Councils and Panchayats have been newly formed.”

Tension erupted at the Uran municipal council counting centre near Navi Mumbai ahead of the vote counting, after a contractor was allegedly allowed to enter the strong room.

Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders and workers questioned how the contractor gained access to the room while carrying breakfast, raising concerns over the security of the process, according to an India Today report.

State minister Chandrakant Patil expressed strong confidence in the BJP’s chances in the ongoing local body elections. On Saturday, he stated, "Organisationally, and in terms of public support, the BJP has moved so far ahead that even if Uddhav and Raj come together, it will not make any difference. Similarly, the Congress contesting alone will have no impact, because we are already far ahead in the race."

During Phase 2 voting in Nashik's Ward no. 2, a 25-year-old man was taken into custody for allegedly trying to vote by impersonating his brother using a fake Aadhaar card, reported PTI news agency. Election authorities have registered a case and are investigating the matter.

A total of 914 officers and staff members, including reserve personnel, have been assigned for the vote counting process. Sufficient police forces have been deployed to ensure law and order, and preventive measures have been put in place.

"The security arrangements have been reviewed," said Jitendra Dudi, Collector and District Election Officer.

He stated that the Mahayuti alliance had previously succeeded in the Lok Sabha and assembly elections and was now set to achieve victory in the municipal polls. "The Mahayuti alliance contested the Lok Sabha elections, it contested the assembly elections, and it will also contest the municipal elections, and the Mahayuti alliance will win," he said.

A turnout of 67.3 per cent was recorded in the polls of 263 local bodies held on December 2, while 47.04 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in the second phase of the elections in 23 local bodies on Saturday, the State Election Commission said. The final voter turnout figure will be shared later in the day, officials said.
