Maharashtra Local Body Elections: The Maharashtra government has declared a paid holiday on December 2 for employees in districts going to polls. The first phase of the long-pending urban and rural local body elections will be held next week, covering 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats (town councils) across the state.
A government resolution issued on Friday, November 28, announced that employees in poll-bound districts will be entitled to a paid holiday to exercise their right to vote, news agency PTI reported. The government has also warned employers who fail to provide paid leave or sufficient time off for employees to vote may face action if complaints are received, The Financial Express reported.

THESE Employees To Get Paid Leave On December 2
The Maharashtra government has granted leave to all employees in poll-bound districts, even if their workplace is outside their registered constituency, where they are registered to vote.
- The paid holiday will apply to all workers, employees, and officers who are registered voters in polling areas, the report added.
- Establishments under the Labour Department, including factories, shops, hotels, commercial offices, IT companies, malls, and retail outlets, are required to comply.
- For essential or continuous services where a full-day holiday is not possible, employers must provide two to three hours of special leave to allow employees to cast their votes.

- The full list of districts is available on the official website of the State Election Commission, Maharashtra.
- The poll-bound districts across Maharashtra include Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Thane, Pune, Kolhapur, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Nanded, Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Solapur, Beed, Amravati, Nagpur, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli, and others.
Elections are set to be held over the next two months for nearly 700 local bodies, including 29 municipal corporations and 32 district councils.
- The first phase of polls will be followed by elections to 336 Panchayat Samitis, 32 Zilla Parishads, and 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, the report added.
- The State Election Commission is yet to announce the detailed schedule.
