A 17-year-old girl was allegedly strangled by her father on the night of September 5 while sleeping in Maharashtra’s Lavhalwadi village after he learned about her affair. According to Badnapur police inspector Ganesh Survase, the accused, identified as Hari Jogdand, was distressed over his daughter’s relationship with a man from their community.

Survase told TOI, “He allegedly murdered her by strangling her while she was asleep."

The farmer allegedly hanged his daughter’s body from a metal angle of the roof with a rope, reportedly in an attempt to stage it as a suicide. According to the report, the accused, who maintains two houses in the village, one where he lives with his wife and two sons, and another where his daughter, the eldest of three children, stayed with her grandmother, committed the crime on Friday night around 10 pm while the girl was asleep.

Police Statement

Police officials said inconsistencies at the scene, along with the postmortem confirming death by strangulation, raised doubts about the initial appearance of suicide. The accused was placed under surveillance and later confessed during questioning on September 6. He was arrested, presented before a local court, and remanded in two-day police custody. Sources told TOI that the investigation began after an anonymous call, prompting a team led by sub-inspector Santosh Kuklare to reach the spot.

In a separate incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, Kidwai Nagar area, a father allegedly strangled his 19-year-old daughter to death while she was asleep and later surrendered at Khalapar police station, confessing to the crime, police said on Sunday.

Gayur, a grocery shop owner in his late 40s, told police he had arranged his daughter Arju’s marriage in Deoband around Diwali, but she refused. Suspecting her of being involved with another man, he said she was “hell-bent on disgracing him” and admitted he lost his temper and killed her on Saturday morning. Police said he isolated Arju by sending his wife and younger daughter to the terrace before strangling her, then informed his wife and left the house. About four hours later, he surrendered at the police station and confessed.
