The latest spell of rainfall in Maharashtra has brought massive devastation as four people have lost their lives so far, while several villages have been cut off in Nanded. On top of that, damage to properties has also been reported.

Rain devastation in Nanded

In Nanded, three people died over the last two days as heavy rains swelled rivers and streams, triggering floods in many areas, officials said.

On Friday, excess rainfall (above 65 mm in 24 hours) was recorded in nine tehsils Kandhar, Mukhed, Loha, Hadgaon, Bhokar, Degloor, Mudkhed, Umri and Naygaon — with heavy rains continuing on Saturday, said a release.

Among the deceased are Shaikh Nasar (72) and Shaikh Hasina (68), who died after a wall of their house collapsed around 4 am in Kot Bazaar village in Kandhar tehsil on Saturday.

Premsingh Pawar (42) drowned after the school van in which he was traveling was swept away while crossing a bridge on the Sindagi (Chikhli) to BodhadiBudruk road. His body was retrieved later.

Siranjani and Siloda villages in Himayatnagar tehsil were cut off due to flooded rivers. Moreover, the connection to Tup Shelgaon and Lakkha villages in Degloor tehsil was cut off after water flowed over a bridge.

Similarly, a flooded nullah led to lost connectivity between Harfad and Harfad Tanda villages. A bridge connecting Sayalwadi, Chota Tanda, and Motha Tanda was damaged due to floods, leading to the loss of communication with the three villages, officials said.

Amid massive devastation, the spell of rain will continue to batter Nanded as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more showers till August 19 and issued a yellow alert.

Mumbai

On Saturday, a landslide in Vikhroli claimed the lives of two individuals. Both belonged to the same family. Apart from them, two others sustained injuries when soil and stones from a hillock collapsed on their hut at Varsha Nagar.

The incident took place at around 2:30 am after which the local authorities reached the site and initiated a rescue operation.

Suresh Mishra (50) and his daughter Shalu (19) died on the spot, while his wife Aarti (45) and son Ruturaj (20) were injured and rushed to a hospital.

The showers continued in the city as IMD has issued a red alert of very heavy rainfall for Saturday. Incessant rainfall caused waterlogging in many areas. The rains are likely to batter the city till August 20.

The red alert has also been issued for neighbouring districts of Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri.
