Mumbai Rains: Heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, have battered parts of Mumbai and its suburbs such as Andheri, Malad, Borivali, and Vile Parle, providing much-needed relief from the intense heat. Similar fresh spells of rain were also reported in nearby areas like Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, and Navi Mumbai.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Navi Mumbai until 11 pm today, warning of heavy pre-monsoon showers.

Additionally, a Red alert remains in effect for Nashik, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg until 10 pm.

According to the X handle SkyWatch Weather India, heavy rainfall is expected in Kalyan, Dombivli, Bhiwandi, and Vasai Virar today. The Borivali-Bhayandar belt and Ovale, Bhayandarpada areas of Thane may experience intense thunderstorms.

“Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are likely at isolated places," said the weather department in its forecast for the city.

The forecast also indicates fairly widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy showers at isolated locations over Konkan and the adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra.

“Isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph is expected over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, during 20-23 May 2025," the weather department added.

Will Monsoon Arrive Early in Mumbai?

The IMD has suggested that Mumbai might welcome the monsoon earlier than usual this year. According to the agency, the monsoon could reach Maharashtra between May 27 and 29. This forecast, shared in early May, points to favourable wind and pressure conditions that may speed up the arrival of the southwest monsoon, which typically reaches Mumbai around June 10.
