A woman and her lover have been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband and burying his body under floor tiles at their home in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, police said on Tuesday.
The shocking crime came to light on Monday when the decomposed body of Vijay Chavan (34), a resident of Gangnipada in Nallasopara, was recovered from beneath newly laid tiles in his house. Police believe he was killed and buried nearly two weeks ago.

After registering a case under sections 103 (murder), 238 (destruction of evidence), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, police traced the suspects, Chavan’s wife, Chaman Devi (28), and her alleged lover Monu Sharma (20), to Hadapsar in Pune, about 270 km from Palghar. They were taken into custody on Tuesday evening, officials said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Bajrang Desai of the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police confirmed the arrests. However, investigators are still working to determine the exact motive and circumstances behind the killing.
According to senior inspector Jitendra Vankoti of the Pelhar police station, the crime came to light after Chavan’s brothers tried to contact him on July 10 for financial help in purchasing a new house. When they couldn’t reach him and were told by his wife that he was away for work, they grew suspicious. By July 19, Chavan’s wife was also unreachable, prompting them to visit the home again.
"During their visit, the brothers noticed freshly laid tiles on the floor. Suspecting foul play, they removed the tiles and were met with a foul smell," said Inspector Vankoti. Authorities were called to the scene and the body was exhumed in the presence of doctors, forensic experts, and a local tehsildar.
Neighbours reportedly confirmed that Chavan had not been seen since July 10, and his wife had disappeared on July 19.
Police believe Chaman Devi murdered her husband with Sharma’s help before fleeing. Further investigation is underway.
