Mumbai Dahi Handi 2025: As the Janmashtami sweeps across India, Mumbai is preparing for one of its most anticipated festival, Dahi Handi. Falling this year on Saturday, 16 August, the celebration will bring together tradition, competition and community enthusiasm in equal measure.
Also known as Krishna Janmashtami, the day marks the birth of Lord Krishna, revered as the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to Hindu belief, Krishna was born on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Devotees celebrate the occasion with devotional songs, prayers, and the famous human pyramid challenge – breaking the ‘handi’ filled with curd, butter, or other treats.

Maharashtra’s Most Famous Janmashtami Tradition
In Mumbai and across Maharashtra, Dahi Handi is more than just a ritual – it is a thrilling public event. Teams of young men, called Govindas, form towering human pyramids to reach the pot tied high above the ground. Each level, or ‘thar’, adds both excitement and risk.
The atmosphere is electric – drum beats, music and cheering crowds fill the streets. In some places, celebrity appearances add extra glamour, while others keep the focus purely on devotional fervour.
