Mumbai News: Three doctors were allegedly assaulted by the relatives of a patient who died during treatment late on Friday night at R.N. Cooper Government Hospital in Mumbai. The hospital has termed the attack “alarming and unacceptable.”

According to hospital authorities, a 65-year-old woman was brought to the emergency ward around midnight with severe breathlessness and extreme weakness. She was immediately attended to by Casualty Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Gaurav Anandgaonkar, Medicine Resident Dr Karan and interns Prashant Bhadke and Rahul Pradhan. Despite continuous CPR and other emergency procedures, the patient could not be revived and was declared dead at 12:32 AM.

Soon after the declaration, one of the patient’s relatives reportedly became violent and physically attacked the doctors. Dr Anandgaonkar was punched several times on the face, while intern Bhadke was also assaulted. Dr Karan sustained injuries to his face, eye, chest and abdomen while trying to defend his colleagues.

The assault took place inside the casualty ward, allegedly in full public view. Hospital officials claimed that security personnel on duty failed to intervene despite repeated calls for help. The hospital named contractual security staff Sanjay Lite, Deepchand, Vikas Kate and Palan Thakur, accusing them of negligence and dereliction of duty.

Following the incident, panic spread across the hospital, with several doctors expressing fear and outrage over the lack of security. A complaint was filed at Juhu Police Station, and the accused, identified as Sameer Abdul Jabbar Shaikh, has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police confirmed that an investigation is underway.

The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (Central MARD) condemned the incident, calling it an “attack on humanity and the medical fraternity.” The association demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and action against the negligent security staff. It also urged authorities to strengthen hospital security by deploying trained and armed guards in emergency areas like casualty, ICU, and maternity wards, supported by round-the-clock CCTV monitoring.

The injured doctors received medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
