Mumbai News: A 27-year-old French woman working with the Consulate of France in Mumbai was allegedly molested near her home in Bandra late on Saturday night. The incident took place along Sherly Rajan Road when she was returning home after midnight on November 7-8.
Police said the woman, who came to India a month ago and works as a teacher, was walking the short distance to her residence when a man on a scooter approached her after noticing she was alone. He stopped close to her and allegedly touched her in an inappropriate manner. The woman shouted for help and the man immediately fled the spot, as reported by an Indian Express report.
The victim was deeply shaken by the experience and remained inside her home for two days. She later confided in a friend, who encouraged her to report the matter. She approached the police on Friday, following which a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Soon after receiving the complaint, the Khar police began checking CCTV cameras placed across the stretch. Officers reviewed multiple camera feeds and traced the route taken by the scooterist. Over the next several hours, the police matched his movements from one camera to the next, eventually tracking him towards Dharavi.
The accused was later identified as Sunil Vishni Waghela, a scrap dealer living in Dharavi. Once his identity was confirmed, a police team traced his exact location and detained him late on Saturday. The motorcycle believed to be used during the incident was also seized.
According to officials, Waghela was taken to the police station for questioning, where he allegedly admitted to the offence. He was then placed under arrest. Police said the investigation is progressing quickly and that he would be presented before a magistrate without delay.
