Mumbai Gokhale Bridge: After years of delays and obstacles, the east-west arm of the Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Mumbai is finally close to completion. This important connector, which links the Gokhale Bridge to the westbound arm of the Barfiwala flyover, is expected to be open to traffic by May 15, 2025.

Once operational, this stretch will significantly benefit motorists travelling from the Western Express Highway (WEH) to the JVPD Scheme signal, allowing them to reach their destinations more quickly. The westbound arm of the Barfiwala flyover has been closed for years, primarily due to the unfinished connector to the Gokhale Bridge. During this time, locals used the area for parking, but parking has now been banned as preparations for public use are underway.

The Gokhale Bridge was closed on November 7, 2022, after being deemed unsafe. Initially scheduled for completion in May 2023, the project faced numerous delays. Phase one, featuring two lanes with height restrictions, opened in February 2024, but currently only cars and two-wheelers are allowed; buses are still prohibited from using the stretch.

However, according to a Times Of India report, commuters should not expect a smooth journey, as a bottleneck is anticipated at the west end. Construction for another flyover linking JVPD has resulted in a pit that will force motorists coming from the east to divert to a service road through a narrow single-lane space. This situation is expected to persist until the JVPD flyover is completed, which is projected to be at least three years away.

Last year, the Gokhale Bridge was nearly ready to reopen after reconstruction, following its partial collapse in 2018 that resulted in two fatalities. However, it could not be opened due to alignment issues with the east-bound arm of the Barfiwala flyover. As the CD Barfiwala flyover prepares for its full opening on May 15, vehicles exiting west will need to make a sharp left turn to proceed toward Juhu, complicating an already congested junction where multiple traffic streams converge.
