Mumbai Local Train Update: Passengers using the Western Railway (WR) can expect significant disruptions as at least 275 local train services will be cancelled from January 24 to January 26. This is due to essential work being carried out on the Mithi River bridge, situated between Mahim and Bandra stations. In addition to the cancellations, around 150 train services will face partial cancellations during this period, affecting both local and long-distance trains.

The railway authorities announced that the existing iron-screw pile rail bridge, which dates back to 1888, will be replaced with concrete pillars. This redevelopment is critical for ensuring the safety and stability of the railway infrastructure. Major blockades will occur on the nights of January 24-25 and January 25-26 as engineers focus on rebuilding the south abutment of what is known as Bridge Number 20.

Mumbai Last Slow Train To Churchgate

The last slow train heading towards Virar will leave Churchgate at 11.58 PM. After this time, trains will switch to the fast line between Mumbai Central and Santacruz, skipping stops at Mahalaxmi, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Matunga Road, Mahim and Khar Road stations. Likewise, slow trains departing from Virar, Bhayandar and Borivali will only operate on the fast line between Santacruz and Mumbai Central, meaning they will not stop at several key stations.

Mumbai Long-Distance Trains Disrupted

In addition to the local train services, four long-distance trains will be cancelled, while ten will be short-terminated and another ten rescheduled as a result of the construction work.

Mumbai Rail Bridge Work

Bridge Number 20, which spans the Mithi River, is supported by eight cast iron pillars, each weighing between 8 to 10 tonnes and extending deep into the river bed, hitting the bedrock at depths of 15 to 20 metres. Each pillar measures around two feet in diameter and has a thickness of 50 mm, designed to bear the weight of the steel girders and rail lines above.

The bridge covers a span of approximately 50 to 60 metres and is primarily supported by seven cement girders. The iron piles at the Churchgate end are embedded in the river bed, while the remaining iron piers are reinforced with cement concrete, leaving only the tops of the iron screws visible.

To facilitate the demolition of the old structure, the railways have installed cofferdams on both sides of the Mithi River to manage water ingress. A high-power pump is being used to remove any water that has accumulated, enabling the safe dismantling of the iron piers.
