Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3 Update: In a bizarre incident on Wednesday, the mobile phones of the commuters stopped functioning on the underground Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3. The non-functioning of mobile phones led to major inconvenience, as the commuters could not buy online tickets and could not even make transactions or phone calls. The authorities, in a note at the stations, urged the commuters to use tickets in offline mode ahead of entering the metro stations to avoid inconveniences. The inconvenience happened due to an alleged dispute between Aqua Line and cellular operators.

The authority had asked the commuters to use offline tickets to access the metro trains; however, in a reply to a query regarding the dispute, the metro authority stated that the allegations against MMRC of illegalities in the process are completely "baseless" and "unfounded".

"With an intent to provide cellular connectivity in the Underground Metro system to all passengers, MMRC had invited bids to set up neutral/common infrastructure which could be used by any telco. This is in line with the best practices followed by other large-scale infrastructure projects such as airports and metro rails across India. MMRCL undertook an open tender process to onboard a neutral infrastructure provider," the MMRC stated in its response.

"The telcos gave their letters of support to the participating bidders, thereby endorsing the tender process. The selected neutral infra provider has the requisite licence to lay and operate the infrastructure, which they have already implemented. As the said provider was onboarded through a competitive, fair and transparent tender process, any allegations against MMRC of illegalities in the process are completely baseless and unfounded," it added, reported Times Now.
