Mumbai Metro 2B Update: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to energise a 5.6-kilometre section of Metro Line 2B, connecting Mandale to Diamond Garden, starting on April 8. This marks the first step in opening the 23.6-kilometre elevated corridor, which will be launched in phases due to previous delays.
Officials have confirmed that the energisation process for the overhead equipment (OHE) has been completed at the test track in the Mandale depot, where the first trainset has already been rolled out. The Times Of India report cited an MMRDA representative as stating that, “This is a significant milestone towards commencing trial runs and preparing for full passenger services. We aim to operationalise the Mandale-Diamond Garden stretch by the end of this year.”
Metro Line 2B to Connect DN Nagar To Mandale via Bandra, Kurla
Metro Line 2B will connect D N Nagar in western Mumbai to Mandale in the east, passing through major areas such as Bandra, Kurla and Chembur. Once fully operational, the line is expected to accommodate over one million passengers daily, alleviating congestion on the city’s roads.
Mandale-Diamond Garden Stretch Prioritised In Phase-Wise Rollout
To expedite the process, MMRDA is implementing the project in phases, with the Mandale-Diamond Garden segment being prioritised. The line will operate on a 25kV AC overhead electric system, consistent with other Mumbai Metro lines.
Mankhurd’s Mandale Depot Built To House 72 Metro Trains
A crucial aspect of this project is the Mandale depot, established on a 31.4-hectare government-owned site in Mankhurd. The depot is designed as a double-decker facility to optimise space and has the capacity to house up to 72 metro trains.
This development is part of the broader Metro Line 2 corridor, which also includes Metro Line 2A. The integration of these lines aims to enhance the overall efficiency of Mumbai's public transport system, ensuring smoother travel for millions of residents.
