In a bid to accelerate revenue generation, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) has invited small business owners and entrepreneurs to set up retail outlets inside Mumbai Metro stations. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the MMMOCL said that the aim promises to transform metro premises into vibrant commercial hubs. Simultaneously, it will also provide business owners with long-term retail licences. 

From food and beverages to fashion and essential services, entrepreneurs can choose from a wide range of business opportunities within these busy commuter corridors.

Mumbai Metro: Which Places Are Currently Open For Retail Business?

Commercial spaces are currently open inside Metro Line 2A across 7 stations, from Andheri West to Dahisar East and Gundavali. A total of 472 kiosks have been put up for sale across 25 commercial blocks covering a total of 68,166 square feet of area.

The area is set to expand with the upcoming connectivity to Mumbai Airport and five new Metro lines. The initiative also highlights that there will be no turnover condition for single kiosks, making it more convenient for small business owners to operate profitably.

Chennai Metro To Open Unused Spaces For Recreational Purposes

In a separate incident, the metro officials of the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) have announced plans to open recreational and commercial facilities at several stations in the 54 km Phase I and Phase I extension network.

Currently, a limited number of food and beverage outlets exist, but only at the street level. At the concourse level, huge swathes of land remain underutilised in the majority of stations. “Bids for letting out spaces in the street level and concourse or ticketing level have been floated,” a CMRL official said, quoted the Hindu.

A total of 14,229 square meters of area is proposed to be utilised on the ground floor and concourse level across 26 stations.
