Mumbai Metro EV Battery Swapping: Mumbai is taking a major step towards sustainable urban transport by setting up electric vehicle (EV) battery swapping stations at metro and monorail stops. The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) has joined hands with Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt Ltd, a unit of Japan’s Honda Motor Co Ltd, to introduce this service across 31 transit stations in the city.

This green initiative was rolled out just ahead of World Environment Day, making Mumbai one of the first Indian cities to integrate EV battery swapping directly with public transport. Under this project, 25 Metro stations and six Monorail stations will feature Honda’s E:swap kiosks, where electric two- and three-wheeler riders can quickly replace used batteries with charged ones. Each swap is expected to take less than two minutes.

Quick Swaps for Two- and Three-Wheelers

According to a News 18 report, the E:swap kiosks will be installed along Metro Lines 2A and 7 and the Monorail route, covering key areas to support daily EV users. The service is a part of MMMOCL’s broader EV Policy, approved in its 29th Board Meeting led by Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS. The aim is to support clean transport and improve last-mile connectivity for commuters, especially delivery partners and fleet operators.

Apart from reducing the dependence on fossil fuels, the project will generate around Rs 30 lakh in non-fare revenue for MMMOCL. All battery swapping stations will follow strict safety, environmental and technical guidelines. The first kiosk has already begun operations at Dahisar East Metro Station.
