The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been designated as the nodal agency for planning and developing a Multimodal Transport Hub (MMTH) under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP). This decision was officially formalized through a government resolution issued on June 18, following a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister on April 21.

The proposed Multimodal Transport Hub aims to integrate Metro, suburban rail, bus services, and non-motorised transport into a single, cohesive system, ensuring seamless connectivity for commuters passing through Dharavi, one of Mumbai’s most densely populated and least connected areas. MMRDA has been tasked with coordinating with the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority and all relevant transport agencies to prepare a comprehensive layout and implementation plan for the project.

Connectivity

The MMTH will also provide convenient access to Sion station on the Central Railway and Mahim station on the Western Railway, which lie on opposite sides of the redevelopment zone, enhancing connectivity across the area.

Metro Line And Stations Connecting Dharavi

As part of the broader redevelopment vision, plans are underway to introduce a second Metro station in Dharavi. In addition to the under-construction Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ), the area is expected to be served by an extension of Metro Line 11 (Wadala-CSMT). According to sources, this extension is likely to continue westward from Wadala to connect with Metro Line 3 at Dharavi, creating a vital east-west and north-south interchange hub within the city’s transit network.

The Rs 16,000 crore Metro Line 11 project, being implemented by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), includes two proposed stations, one near Sion and another within Dharavi, further enhancing connectivity in the region, according to the TOI rteport.

To support the bus operations within the Multimodal Transport Hub, the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) includes plans to construct a modern depot for BEST. In exchange, 12 acres of land currently occupied by the Dharavi and Kalakilla bus depots in Sion East, home to around 300 buses and key offices of the transport and power supply divisions, will be released for the development of the MMTH.

Officials stated that the plan extends beyond Metro integration, incorporating infrastructure for feeder buses, pedestrian pathways, and cycling to enhance last-mile connectivity. "The intent is to build a future-ready mobility hub, not just a station," said an official, according to the TOI report.
